Which Filter Is Best? [HEPA vs. MERV]

August 31, 2022 | Blog

Homeowners across the great state of Texas have heard of the benefits of air filters for their space. But how well do you know about your different options? How do you know which HVAC filter works best for your system? With so many types of filters on the market, various ratings and certifications, deciding what product works best for your home can be overwhelming.

That’s why Barker’s Heating & Cooling is here to help! Our team has years of industry experience working for residents in College Station and surrounding areas. Let us help you make sense of popular filtration options so your household can breathe easier indoors – read on to learn!

What Is HEPA?

HEPA filters, or High Efficiency Particulate Air filters, are a certified filter design with fibers arranged in a specific formation to capture as high as 99.97% of airborne contaminates 0.3 microns or larger. This term is used loosely by some filtration brands, so be mindful when shopping for a HEPA filter. Look for the True HEPA certification as opposed to HEPA type.

True HEPA filters cannot be washed or cleaned and must be replaced instead. On the other hand, HEPA type filters can be washable and are rated to block 90-99% of airborne contaminants – but not all germs and bacteria. True HEPA filters can be found in air purification systems, air conditioners and vacuum cleaners.

What Is MERV?

MERV stands for minimum efficiency reporting value, measured by a rating of 1-20. Unlike HEPA filters, MERV refers to the efficiency of the filter, rather than its design. Ratings between 16-20 work well in places like hospitals and nuclear facilities but aren’t suitable for home use. Filters with a MERV rating between 8-13 are suitable for residential use. If your filter has a MERV rating of 5 or below, it can still trap particulates like dust, insect debris and carpet fibers, but a rating between 8-13 is recommended.

MERV ratings determine the effectiveness of your filter in eliminating airborne toxins and pollutants. MERV filters are suitable for all types of central ACs and heaters, with specific ratings varying between models.

Trusted IAQ Solutions In College Station

The reason why your filter choice matters is that an air filter directly affects your home’s IAQ – indoor air quality. An ineffective or poorly-made filter isn’t going to trap a large number of contaminants, while filters with very high ratings can overwork your AC. It’s important to find the balance between clean indoor air and energy efficiency.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Very Professional

Chandler did an excellent job checking out our heat pump. He was very professional, communicated well, was responsive to our questions and I was very happy with everything he did.

Steve M.

Honest and Trustworthy

Our AC went out during a late summer heatwave. Called Barkers and Victor worked very hard to get the outside unit up and running. Two hours later we conceded to the death of a 29 yo unit. Victor notified the office the next morning, and within 24 hours we had a complete new system installed, and the house cooled by the time I got home from work. Highly recommend. Honest and trustworthy.

Susan H.

Very Impressed

We were impressed by this company from the first phone call. Reed was an exceptional young man; very personable and professional. The installation team of Mike, John and Cody did an excellent job. Barker’s is a business with high standards and we are very satisfied with everything about them. So glad we found this company!
