Careers in the HVAC Industry
The one good quality everyone can agree on in a profession is job security. While it may not be a career people normally think of, an HVAC career has many advantages, including the security of always being needed.
Whether in a home or business, people want to be comfortable. When they aren’t comfortable they need help, sometimes at all hours of the day or night. If you choose an HVAC career, you may be in demand and be constantly busy.
HVAC Career Training
Unlike traditional college degrees, HVAC training can be completed in as little as 6 months, and even longer programs are only two years. You may even be able to find an apprenticeship so you can learn while you work.
The most important thing is to make sure that you are working toward certification. You don’t want to put all the work into your program and find out no one can hire you.
Jobs for HVAC mechanics are growing much faster than average. If more people don’t enter the field, there may be a shortage. This is good for anyone entering the field.
HVAC technicians are paid well, especially after they get experience and add to their skills. The region also makes a big difference, as some areas have higher demand. The overall average salary, though, is about $45,000.
HVAC Job Paths
The kind of job you choose will determine your working conditions. The one we see the most is the HVAC technician, who comes to the home or business for regular maintenance or repair. The HVAC Technician may be able to work 9 to 5, or be on call for emergencies.
Some choose to be HVAC engineers, and others specialize in system installation. Refrigerant Technicians care for refrigeration and cooling systems, such as those found in restaurants. Solar Technicians and Wind Turbine Technicians are becoming more in demand as they are needed.
Especially with new regulations, homes are becoming more energy efficient. HVAC technicians need to keep up with new information and certifications.
