What You Should Do If Your AC Won’t Turn Off

The heat in College Station, Texas, can become intense during the summer months. An air conditioner is the only thing that keeps your home from becoming a sweltering oven. The hard work your air conditioner performs during warm weather causes wear and tear, which can lead to it not working correctly. One big red flag that your AC needs maintenance or repair is that it won’t turn off.

If you notice your AC is running continuously without pause, then there are a few steps you should take to try to fix the situation.

Is Your Thermostat Set Correctly?

Your first step should be to check the thermostat. If the thermostat is set too low, set incorrectly, or reset without your knowledge, it may cause the AC to run nonstop. If this is the issue, then you’ll probably also notice that your home is much colder than you prefer. To fix this, set your thermostat to room temperature; this should essentially cause the AC to stop running. If your AC continues to run after you’ve changed the thermostat, then the issue is probably not the thermostat.

Is the Fan Switch Set to Manual?

Most AC units have a fan switch located either near the blower or on the thermostat. The switch has two settings: auto and manual. When switched to auto, the fan will only run at certain times. A fan switched to manual will run constantly. Check to make sure the fan isn’t set to manual; if it is, turn it to auto to see if your AC stops running.

Is the Air Filter Dirty?

Air filters need to be changed periodically because they become clogged with dust and debris over time. In fact, a dirty filter can actually cause your AC to run constantly but not create any cold air. A severely dirty filter can result in your AC not turning on at all. Check your filter and replace it with a clean one to see if that solves the problem.
